Lubricants and fluids
The engine oil included is important in the engine
Oil viscosity measures the time it takes for oil to flow through a container at a certain temperature.
Higher viscosity oils flow longer than lower viscosity oils. Engine oils are usually classified by the number xW-xx, e.g. SAE 5W-30. The "W" stands for "Winter" and the first number indicates cold temperature flow behaviour. The last two numbers indicate the kinematic viscosity measured at 100 degrees Celsius, which determines the dilution rate at higher temperatures.
There are different types of lubricants which have to meet different requirements. Engine oil changes are essential to maintain the life of the engine, especially when using high quality BMW Longlife-04 oil. The milky appearance of engine oil may indicate certain types of contamination and may require an oil change, which can cost up to €150. Internal engine friction can be reduced by using lubricants containing high levels of additives.
Which engine oil should I use for my car?
The choice of the right engine oil depends on the type of vehicle, the engine and the manufacturer's specifications. Refer to your vehicle's manual for recommended specifications.
Can I mix different brands of engine oil?
Mixing different brands of engine oil is not recommended as it may lead to undesirable reactions. It is best to use the same brand and type of oil.
How often should I change my gearbox oil?
The intervals for changing gearbox oil vary depending on the type of vehicle and the operating conditions. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
Can I mix different brake fluids?
It is not recommended to mix different brake fluids as this may reduce performance. Always use the brake fluid recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
